Miami-Dade County District 7, which includes Key Biscayne, Commissioner Raquel Regalado has sponsored legislation to honor the late former County Manager Merrett Stierheim with a street naming.
The proposed legislation is expected to be voted on at the Board of County Commissioners meeting this Tuesday, July 16. Regalado’s proposal names a portion of the South Dade Transit Way between the Dadeland South Metrorail Station and Southwest 112th Street as “The Merrett R. Stierheim Busway.”
The Dadeland South Station is one of the busiest stations in the County. Recently, it was the site of a groundbreaking ceremony launching a project to upgrade the 40+ year-old station, which is the southernmost end of the existing Metrorail system.
Stierheim was a public servant more than six decades ago, serving as county manager of Miami-Dade County from 1976 to 1986 and from 1998 to 2001. During his tenure as county manager, he successfully supervised a $5 billion Countywide infrastructure expansion, including the construction of Miami Metro Zoo (now known as Zoo Miami), the downtown library and cultural complex, Government Center (also known as the Stephen P. Clark Center), several regional parks, libraries, water, sewer, and solid waste facilities, and the County’s mass transit system – Metrorail and Metromover.
During his career, Stierheim also served as a superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, former city manager of the City of Miami and the Town of Miami Lakes, and president and CEO of the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau.
